To the best of my knowledge nobody has found a free/cheap MP3 to MIDI converter that works effectively.

Or if they have they're not telling us about it. I think a lot of people have experimented with some of the software out there, but all the reviews I've read have been pretty disappointing. But do not despair! These programs are being refined and developed all the time and there's a healthy community here constantly searching for a new way to make music. So if/when somebody finds a good affordable converter I think this will be the place to find it.

Re: LotRO MIDI Player and MIDI to ABC converter

I finally found two related bugs that could cause the exported ABC file's timing to be incorrect and the song to sound "laggy".

    1. When there were 6 or more notes that played at the same time, the timing could get messed up in the exported ABC files.
(The program adds a rest inside a chord to change its length; previously this rest wasn't being added when a chord was already "full" with 6 notes.)
    2. If a note was shorter than 1/16th of a second, it caused extra delay to be added in the song. Now, notes that are very short get extended to be 1/16th of a second.
(Notes shorter than <1/16th of a second get quantized to be zero-length. The program compensated for the zero length by adding a rest after the note, but didn't actually write out the zero-length note. This caused an extra rest to be added in the song.)

Hopefully with these bugs fixed, there won't be any more timing issues in exported songs. I wasn't able to verify that it completely fixed the problem where multi-part songs could go out of sync (I didn't have anyone else to test with). However, songs exported after the fix "sound" better than before the fix.

Let me know if there are still timing issues with exported songs.

I ran this last night after getting the update on two songs that previously had timing issues, and they came out perfect. Great update! Thanks for your work with this application.

Re: LotRO MIDI Player and MIDI to ABC converter

I'm missing something obvious here... I got your utility to hook up ok. And I can play my instrument in-game using my midi keyboard. Except... no sharps or flats! Please tell me what I'm overlooking. I'll dope-slap myself in advance and save you the trouble... <slap slap slap...>

Edit: I'm new to this music system... Could it even BE possible that lotro doesn't support sharps and flats? Seems absurd, but it would explain...

Edit of the edit: Ok, got it. My default keymap had very few of the notes mapped. I went and mapped them all and then they all played just fine. Fun. btw, D, in answer to your question... I use your tool to play midi files and also to free-play myself with a midi keyboard.

Nice program, I really like it Is there any way to download a stand-alone version? It would be much easier to run it directly from my hard drive.

When you run LotRO MIDI player for the first time, it should put a shortcut on the desktop. If you don't have a desktop shortcut:
    • Open the Java Control Panel (it should be in the Control Panel; if not, it's C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\javacpl.ex e)
    • Under Temporary Internet Files, click View...
    • Select LotRO MIDI Player and click the button to install shortcuts

If that's not what you want, I also wrote up instructions to manually download and install it.

Re: LotRO MIDI Player and MIDI to ABC converter

Just wanted to drop by and say thanks for the awesome program. I use it all the time when I'm bored, and the "Play Lotro sound in background" has saved my bacon more than once when I've alt-tabbed to look for Quest info.

I've only found a few files that can't be played, most of them being one track midis. The rest can be played around with to get the right track mix.

    Also, /bump.

Yeah, if all of the instruments are jammed into the same track, the program doesn't give you a way to separate them. Technically it's possible to split a single track by instrument or channel... Perhaps in a future version if I ever have time to update it

    Glad you like it.

Tempo shifts are a pain, but I found the way to do it accurately. In RunABC and Anvil I have to do a lot of this by hand, but I can do it nonetheleess. So, here is a suggestion for your program to use.

Start with the tempo posted by the song (or have a prompt for tempo in your conversion window which is even better), even if it changes repeatedly throughout the song. Then, as the song changes tempo, your program uses the following fraction for its notes until the tempo is returned to normal:

    (Note length)*(ABC Tempo)/(Current Tempo)

So, if converting a song and using a tempo of 200, and the song shifts its tempo down to 134, and you wanted to show a quarter note with L=1/8, it would be:

    2 (2 1/8th notes for the quarter note)*200/134
    or
    400/134

    A couple of notes for example: a400/134 b100/134 [c200/134d200/134]

Yes, LOTRO will support such a fraction in the game. Sure, you could also put in a fraction reduction function based on prime numbers and the like, to try "polish" up the ABC file a bit, but the important work is done first with the fraction itself.

Those example notes above would be then: a200/67 b50/67 [c100/67d100/67]

If you have it do a fraction reduction routine, then you honestly can just use this function throughout the song, regardless if there is or is not tempo shifts. Might slow up the conversion with needless routines, but might save you headaches coding it as well. What you have to watch out for is tempo shifts making notes too fast to play. The following is an error check you can run:

X = The length of any note in the abc, even a fraction as above for tempo shifts
T = The tempo of the abc
L = The L value of the song, setting the base note length

    T/(L*X) <= 4000

    For example:
the first note: a400/134 in an abc with a tempo of 200 and a L value of 1/8.

    200/(1/8*400/134) <=? 4000
    *after calculations*
536 <=? 4000 Yes, so the note will play.

Good luck! I don't envy you trying this project out at all.

That's a good suggestion. If/when I have time to work on the program again, I'll see if it's possible to make it work with what I have now.

I cannot get this program to work... I click on the run link and the following error comes up:

    Code:

I've tried it on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 and none of them work, but all come up with slightly different errors. The above error is the error from Windows XP.

I have the latest Java installed, and I've tried it with Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox.

I also tried the manual install method mentioned on page 2 and that doesn't work either.

Thank you, and I am looking forward to using this program if I can get it to work!

Hey! This program looks great - I have a Yamaha Arius (a MIDI Keyboard). Once I buy the wires (hopefully tomorrow), will I infact be able to hook my Arius up to my computer, and play LIVE over the game? i.e., I sit there watching my minstrel playing a lute, and when I play notes on my Yamaha, he plays the same notes on the lute? Is that possible with this program?
