 The War of the Ring is the great conflict at the end of the Third Age, named for the One Ring and the importance this had in the final outcome. The war was fought between the Free Peoples (a loose alliance of Elves and Men led by the Wise) and Sauron the Dark Lord, with Saruman as a third power based in Orthanc.
The Lord of the Rings Online is set in the Third Age, during the War of the Ring. The game begins approximately after Frodo leaves the Shire with the One Ring and has progressed to the point where the Fellowship depart Rivendell.
The Free-peoples of Middle-earth
The Free-peoples is a term used at the time of the War of the Ring to describe Elves, Dwarves and Hobbits, and those Men who had not fallen under the power of Sauron.
 A fighting force to bring darkness and desolation to the peaceful lands of Middle-earth. No one wants to dwell on the nefarious purpose for which such a tyrant might be conducting such atrocities, but fear is sweeping the lands...
 Creatures bred and twisted by darkness, animals of a most natural order, and terrifying, bodiless spirits... You never know what will be lurking around the next corner as you journey across Eriador!
The Lord of the Rings Online includes a rich environment filled with well-known regions, buildings, and landmarks from The Lord of the Rings' and The Hobbit, as well as many newly envisioned dungeons and other locations.
